Family Pet Adoption Day

We had a wonderful turnout at the Family Pet Adoption Day!

We had at least 250 people show up for the event.  Despite 25+ mph winds, it all went very well.
I don't have a count yet on the potential homes yet, though will keep you all posted.
I know we had promising applications on a lot of the animals.

A big thank you to the volunteers and students that participated!
We couldn't have done it without you.

A huge thank you to the following individuals who spent so much time and effort on this to make it such a success:

Christy Smith, who put so much effort into the behind the scenes work and planning.

Debi Smith and Dalmation Rescue who also not only helped sponsor and coordinate the event,
brought in a TON of volunteers to help at the last minute.

Dr. Marie Suthers-McCabe, (CENTAUR/VMRCVM) who helped coordinate, sponsor,
and get the VMRCVM-side taken care of.

Niki Wilson, Veterinary Student from OTS Club, who coordinated the groups of students and made sure that all ran smoothly - AND provided lunch for all volunteers and students!

Tom Wills made some awesome signs and did a lot of the behind the scenes things that made it a success!

And to the groups and their volunteers that participated and put so much effort into caring for and helping the numerous animals in need!

The third annual Family Pet Adoption Day is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (VMRCVM) on Virginia Tech's campus.

The Family Pet Adoption Day is intended to facilitate pet adoptions and raise awareness of concerns related to overpopulation of animals. Dogs and cats that are in the custody and care of area shelters and adoption programs will be on site and available for adoptions. Pound Pals of Radford, Floyd County Humane Society, VA PAWS, Dalmatian Rescue of Southwest Virginia, Angels of Assisi, Boxer K9 Rescue of Southwest Virginia, Sheltie Rescue of Northern Virginia, Siberian Husky Assist, Humane Society of Montgomery County, and several other organizations will participate in the Family Pet Adoption Day.

All of the animals that are up for adoption will be spayed or neutered, be immunized against infectious diseases, and be free of obvious abnormalities at the time of examination. VMRCVM students will perform complete physical examinations on all of the animals under the guidance of VMRCVM faculty.

The students will administer adoption questionnaires to potential owners and assist the the participating organizations in making the suitable  matches. The event coordinators will be responsible for checking references and conducting home visits prior to placing the animal. The animals will not be allowed to go home with their new owners on the day of the event and there also will be an adoption fee for all animals.

The Virginia Partnership for Animal Welfare and Support (VA PAWS), VMRCVMs Center for Animal Human Relationships (CENTAUR), the Omega Tau Sigma Service Fraternity (OTS),and several local animal welfare organizations are working together to sponsor the adoption program.
