VA
PAWS Becomes Fiscal Sponsor of
PetSafe of the New River Valley
VA PAWS is proud to announce that it has agreed to act as fiscal sponsor to
an exciting new program, PetSafe of the New River Valley. PetSafe of the NRV has
been created to provide temporary emergency shelter and care for the pets of
domestic violence victims while they are transitioning to permanent safe
housing.
Why PetSafe of the NRV? Research has demonstrated that, for many abused
women, the companionship of pets may be an important source of social support in
coping with the stress of domestic violence. Threats by abusive partners to harm
or kill pets can be powerful manipulative tools that keep women from leaving
potentially lethal violent relationships. For example, in one sample of victims
of domestic violence, 71% of women who owned pets reported that their partner
had threatened or harmed their pet, and 57% reported that their pet had actually
been physically harmed or killed by their partner.
Unfortunately, taking pets with them to domestic violence shelters when they
leave may not be an option for many abused women. In fact, the Women’s
Resource Center, the sole domestic violence shelter in the NRV, is not equipped
to handle animals. Therefore, many women in our community have been faced with
the choice to flee and to leave their pets in the hands of violent abusers, or
to remain in danger themselves to protect their companion animals. PetSafe is
currently working with the Women’s Resource Center of the NRV to provide an
alterative for these women and their families.
How Does PetSafe of the NRV Work? When a woman in need contacts PetSafe, a
PetSafe staff person will administer a brief phone screening, and will then work
with the her on a case-by-case basis to develop a plan to address her needs and
those of her pet. This plan can include placement of the animal with PetSafe for
a few days, or even a few months. If the caller is not able to provide
vaccination and health records, basic inoculations will be administered (to
include DHLPP and rabies), and de-worming and testing for feline leukemia will
be undertaken. Spay/neuter services through Angels of Assisi spay/neuter shuttle
will be offered to the owner, and will be scheduled if requested.
While women are asked to contribute to the costs of animal care, it is not
anticipated that many will be able to contribute substantially to the costs of
their animals’ care. Therefore, PetSafe is dependent upon grants and community
donations to help defray these costs. VA PAWS has kindly offered to cover the
cost of all basic inoculations. Spay/neuter services will be provided by the
Angels of Assisi spay/neuter shuttle for a reduced rate, also thanks to the
cooperation with VA PAWS. Blood testing for feline leukemia is obtained from a
licensed veterinarian.
How Can I Help? PetSafe is truly grateful for the support of VA PAWS, and
would not be able to exist without PAWS’ help. If you are in need of the
services PetSafe offers, or if you know anyone who is, please contact us 24
hours a day at 381-4643, or at petsafe@charter.net. If you are interested in
